Worst Marriage Proposals Ever?

This year is, of course, Leap Year and today is the day that women can traditionally propose to their boyfriends.

If you are thinking of popping the question in a public way today, I thought I would share a couple of ways ways NOT to do it followed by the way that you should!

Big fail proposing at a basketball game. Don't think the pat on the back by a giant fluffy mouse helped to console him.

This one is a bit extreme!

Now....this is the way to do a marriage proposal!

What Does A Pig Have To Do With Mindreading?

During Mindwarped!, my mindreading stage show, I get four audience members to draw a picture without me seeing what they are. I then get them to mix up the pictures so that I have no idea which person has produced which drawing. Once this has been done, I then attempt to match each drawing to the person who drew it using my mentalist/mindreading skills.

In my show, I tend to use the skill of lie detection to determine which drawing belongs to which person. Once we get down to the last person, I then attempt to draw what they drew without seeing their picture but just based on what I can observe about the person, their personality and their body language.

However, I always find it amazing to see how much of what we draw can reveal about our personalities. During my show, I tend to find that certain people of certain types make certain drawings. So, being able to ascertain their personality type can help me to work out who did which drawing.

The PIG Test

Here's a fun test for you to try that demonstrates the above.

Just get a piece of paper and a pen or pencil....and then draw a Pig!

Don't scroll down any further and don't think about it....just draw a Pig!

I'll wait here while you do it :)

Go on.....off you go :)

Have you done?

Okay.... so, this is the thing.... the way that you have drawn your Pig actually tells us a lot about your personality. If you haven't drawn your pig yet, don't scroll down any further....draw your pig first!

If you have drawn your pig, then you should find the following analysis insightful.

Where on the paper have you drawn your Pig?

  • If you have drawn your pig towards the top of the paper, this shows that you are positive and optimistic.
  • If you have made your drawing towards the centre of the paper, then you are more realistic and down to earth.
  • If you have drawn your pig towards the bottom of the paper, this shows that you are pessimistic and tend to behave negatively.

Which way is the Pig facing?

  • If your pig is facing towards the left, you believe in tradition, are friendly and tend to remember dates and birthdays.
  • If your pig is facing right, you are innovative and active but you do not have a strong sense of family and don't tend to remember dates very well.
  • If your pig is facing towards the front, you are direct, enjoy playing devil's advocate and neither fear nor avoid discussions.

How detailed is your Pig?

  • If your pig has a lot of detail, you can be analytical, cautious and distrustful.
  • If your pig has little or no detail, your are emotional, care little for detail and are a bit of a risk taker.

How many legs does your Pig have?

  • If your pig has less than 4 legs showing, you are insecure and going through a period of major change.
  • If your pig has 4 legs showing, you are secure, stubborn and stick to your ideals.
  • More than 4 legs shows that you either have a sense of fun....or you are stupid!

How big are your Pig's ears?

  • The size of your pig's ears determine how good a listener you are. Obviously, the bigger the better!

How long is your Pig's tail?

  • The length of your pig's tail determines the quality of your sex life. The longer the tail, the better you sex life. So.....who didn't draw a tail then :)

So, how accurate was the analysis of your drawing?

Don't forget that the above exercise is only for fun. Try it with your friends and work colleagues and see what type of personality they really are. : )

Also, if you liked this....don't forget to share it with your friends :)

Until next time!

Top Magic In Blackpool This Weekend

This weekend, from today, sees the start of the 60th Annual Magic Convention in Blackpool.

I've got to be honest and say that I've never really been a big attender of conventions in the past, but if I were to attend one, it would be the Blackpool Magic Convention. There really is nothing quite like it! In fact, I would have actually attended this year if I hadn't previously booked myself a Wedding gig this weekend!

For the magicians reading this, you'll know exactly what to expect, in fact, you'll probably be there. If you are a member of the public and live in or around the Blackpool area, then you are in for a treat this weekend.

The Blackpool Magic Convention is attended by thousands of Magicians from all over the world and centres mainly around the Opera House and the Winter Gardens. It's a place where like-minded magicians from all over the world can gather and share their ideas, attend lectures by their peers and buy the latest tricks and illusions to take back home and build into their acts. However, it is much, much more than that. It is a place where magicians can socialise with each other, show each other their latest tricks and generally have a great time!

Of course, most of the events are for magicians only and will be held behind closed doors. However, if you are a member of the public, you will see magic everywhere in Blackpool this weekend. Thousands of eager magicians will be happy to show you their latest piece of wizardry. You will see magicians in bars, cafe's and even in the street willing to perform for free.

If you are lucky enough to be able to grab a ticket, you will also be able to enjoy the three Gala Shows which, this year, focuses on magic from three different areas of the world.

On the Friday night you will see magic from Asia featuring the eight of the best Korean magicians.

On the Saturday night you have magic from the USA & Canada featuring Danny Cole, Charlie Frye & Co., Dirk Losander, Richard Forget, Andost, Chris Hart and Jason Latimer from the BBC TV Show "The Magicians"

Sunday night sees magic from Europe with Jean Garin, Aaron Crow, Compagnie Poc, Sebatastian Nicholas,  Les Chapeau Blancs, Marc Metral, Lumina The Laser Violinist, Christian Farla and our very own Amethyst and even Ken Dodd.

If you can get tickets, these are amazing shows to watch. If you can't, then the place to be is the Ruskin Hotel. This is the Head Quarters of the convention where hundreds of magicians, both amateur and professional alike, cram into the bar and perform magic for anyone who is willing to watch until the wee small hours of the morning.

Whether you are a magician or a member of the public, if you are a magic fan, this weekend in Blackpool will be an absolute treat. I just wish I could be there with you all.

Have a great time y'all :-)

This amazing piece of work was created by Edgar Muller.

This last one is by person or persons unknown, but isn't it absolutely beautiful!

Why You Should Book A Close Up Magician For Your Corporate Event

Close Up Magic is an incredibly popular form of entertainment suitable for many events. Recently, it has been made even more popular with recent television programmes such as "The Magicians" and "Penn & Teller: Fool Us".

Many people have watched magic performed on television by such performers as David Blaine or Dynamo. However, magic performed live - close up and personal - is a completely different experience altogether. With a live performance of magic there can be no camera tricks and no chance of collusion as the eye-popping illusions are performed.

What Type Of Events Will A Close Up Magician Be Suitable For?

Close Up Magic is the perfect entertainment and ice-breaker for most Corporate Events. It is ideal for Corporate Hospitality, Drinks Receptions, Award Ceremonies and  Product Launches. By their very nature, many clients at these events don't tend to know each other. Close Up Magic is an ideal way to bring these people together and get them talking and networking.

At Product Launches and Trade Shows, Close Up Magic can be used to stop passing traffic and build a crowd. Product messages can also be built into the presentation in order to deliver clear and concise product information to the audience while keeping them entertained and enthralled.

Close Up Magic is ideal for Corporate Training Days as virtually any business message that you would like to get across can be interwoven into a presentation which will keep your clients entertained and focused.

For Team Building Days, Close Up Magic can be used to bring staff together and build core business skills. In our Team Building event, a 15 to 20 minute magic presentation can be given, after which the clients break out into groups. Each group will then be taught one close up magic trick which they will then have to rehearse, script and present to the entire delegation. This teaches teamwork, problem-solving, communication and presentational skills in a fun and interactive way.

For further information on  how a Close Up Magician can enhance your Corporate Event, get in touch with us at www.eastmidlandsmagic.co.uk and soon, you could see this unique and remarkable entertainment helping your business.

"The Magicians" - A Review

So, Saturday evening saw the grande finale of the BBC show "The Magicians" and with it, probably the last primetime TV magic show to be on our screens for a while.

To be fair, I thought this second series was much, much better than the first. However, the series didn't come without it's "highs and lows".

The problem really is with it's format, which really doesn't show the resident magicians in the best light. Latimer, Barry & Stuart & Pete Firman are all performers at the top of their game. Unfortunately, the celebrity element of the show tends to pull them down into a mediocre performance.

Take Pete Firman as a prime example. Pete Firman live is one of the funniest, most original and professional performers I have ever seen. If you have not seen this guy perform live, then I suggest that you catch him on his 2012 tour. You really will have a superb evening watching a fantastically gifted and hilariously funny magician. Which leads us to the problem of the TV show.

Pete Firman as a performer is incredibly funny. However, trying to re-create that humour with a random celebrity is very difficult. The only performer to come close to it is Adam Woodyatt, who was a great foil for Pete's humour. As to the rest of the celebrities to work with Pete, well apart from Joe Swash, it was like watching amateurs night at the local magic club. This, of course, was not Pete's fault. The problem is with trying to fit a poorly rehearsed celebrity into the performance. Pete performing his own act, on a primetime television would have been fantastic!

Another casualty of the format were Barry & Stuart, again, incredibly talented performers in their own right.

Barry & Stuart are one-offs. It is virtually impossible to describe their act to anyone who hasn't seen it. However, it is suffice to say that they are funny, yet dark and fascinating to watch. And yet,  this only came over a couple of times in this primetime show.

And, worst of all, probably due to the short rehearsal time available with each celebrity, they came close to revealing a top class stage illusion that many performers have paid close to £12,000 to perform!

This made Barry & Stuart look bad and amateurish which, I know, upset a lot of fellow magicians.

Of all three acts, I think Latimer came off the best and performed illusions that were, for me, the highlight of the series.

His levitation illusion was a thing of beauty as was his water form creation and his transposition of a group of spectators from one articulated lorry to another while both were on the move!

Again, though, there were times that just didn't cut it for Latimer. The Hoff is just one that stands out as being utterly dreadful.

The problem for me is that this becomes the public's perception of the performers. If the routine doesn't work out, it is the magician that tends to look bad and not the celebrity.

As I say, overall, I think this series was much, much better than the first one. However, I think it's high time that the broadcasters put on a primetime show where the magic and the magicians can shine rather than using the tired celebrity or game show format.

The problem is, who's going to be brave enough to pick up the mantle?

University Students Need Toilet Instruction?

Just what is the world coming to?

Swansea University have recently found it necessary to put posters up in the Campus to instruct students how to correctly use the toilets as they were constantly found to be in a state.
And...they are blaming it in cultural differences!!!!

Nah....more likely just lazy students displaying the kind of behaviour they would never display at home. Grow up, guys!

How Using A Close Up Magician Can Benefit Your Restaurant

Having a Close Up Magician in your restaurant can help to increase the amount of tables you turn, giving a unique dining experience to your customers and also helping to create a warm family friendly environment.

A close-up magician at your restaurant would aim to visit the tables of customers who are waiting for their main courses to arrive. This has advantages for both the customer and for the restaurant team.

Working alongside your Waiting Staff, if food is delayed through a high number of orders, a magician can go over to the table in question taking focus off the delay. This means that customers will almost never complain about the waiting time and they will have a far more enjoyable dining experience. They will have more to talk about at the table and more to talk about when they get home, which in turn will create a higher % of return custom.

Benefits of booking a table magician for your restaurant:

It will give you an edge over the competition.

• It will increase customer traffic on slower days.

You will gain more frequent and repeat visits.

It will add prestige.

Special events, such as Birthdays can be made to feel "extra special" with a personal magical performance.

It will give you coverage for unexpected delays.

It promotes a family environment (depending on child policy).

It is a deterrent for walkouts as your customers can be entertained whilst waiting for a table.

You will benefit from free advertising for your restaurant during promotion of our magicians at public appearances and private shows, and on our website, especially if your restaurant offers a residency.

Waiting time will pass faster for hungry customers.

If you would like to trial the benefits of having a close up magician in your restaurant, please give us

Why Book A Mind Reader For your Event?

There is absolutely no doubt that Mind Readers are incredibly popular at the moment, the most famous of which is the incomparable Derren Brown with his sensational television specials.

Just how does he read people's minds, influence their thoughts and do the incredible things that he wants them to do?

It is easy to think that the participants of such television shows are just actors or stooges playing along for the camera.

This is not so with a real live Mind Reader at your special event.

When the Mind Reading is performed live with people that you know, it is obvious that there is no collusion between the participants and the Mind Reader.

This is what makes it astounding!

Just how does a Mind Reader steal thoughts from people's minds?

Just how does he influence their choices?

These are the questions you and your guests will ask when you book a Mind Reader like Mark Roberts to perform at your events.

So what exactly can you expect a Mind Reader to do at your event?

  • He will be able to duplicate drawings made by your participants and completely hidden from view.

  • He will be able to tell you the name of the first person that you kissed, he will perform accurate lie detection and explain the techniques that he is using so that the audience can play along.

  • He will perform mathematical feats and play a psychological game where the audience can win a large sum of cash. Of course, they will have to get past the psychological mind games first!

  • He will also pass these skills along to one audience member so that they can appear to read the mind of another.

All these skills and much more will be demonstrated if you book a Mind reader for your event.

Don't forget that Mark is definitely NOT a psychic! All the above demonstrations are achieved by a mixture of psychological and performance techniques along with a little "Jiggery Pokery"  in order to result in what you see.

So, what type of events will a Mind Reader be suitable for?

Well, Mark's 45 minute Mindwarped! stage show is suitable for all corporate events, after dinner functions, theatres and private parties. Within this show, Mark will demonstrate all the above skills and more, all presented with a great deal of humour and fun to ensure that your audience leaves with an unforgettable experience.

Mind Reading is also ideal for Trade Shows and Product Launches where the Mind Reading can be used to stop passing traffic and build a crowd. Product messages can also be built into the presentation in order to deliver clear and concise product information to the audience while keeping them entertained and enthralled.

Mind reading is also ideal for Corporate Training Days as virtually any business message that you would like to get across can be interwoven into a presentation which will keep your clients entertained and focused.

Mind Reading can also be performed close up and personal. This type of presentation is ideal for Wedding Receptions, Cocktail Parties, Restaurants and Corporate Hospitality.

To see how a Mind reader can enhance your function or event, get in touch with us at www.illusionsofthemind.co.uk and soon, you could see this unique and remarkable entertainment at your event.

Nun In A Bun!

Following on from the post about the Woolly Mammoth this morning, I thought I would share the above famous "Nun In A Bun" photo.

Have to admit, I LOVE this pic, though :)

Woolly Mammoth Still Alive?

So, I wake up this morning to see rumours that the Woolly Mammoth, long thought to be extinct, is actually alive and living in Siberia!

Well, from a distance, it actually looks like a Woolly Mammoth and the actual video footage can be seen on the link above. However, during my work, I am well accustomed to the fact that sometimes people can see exactly what they expect to see, whether it is actually there or not.

So, the question you have to ask yourself guys is, is this actually a Woolly Mammoth prowling the rivers in Siberia or......is it a large grizzly carrying a fish?

What do you think?

Why Book A Wedding Magician?

Your Wedding Day is the biggest and most important day of your life. So it's important that you get it right.

Often, your wedding guests don't know each other, so it's important to break the ice. This is where a Close Up Magician or Mind Reader becomes the perfect solution.

The photo-shoot can be a really dull time for your guests as they wait around for the shots to be taken. During this time, a Magician or Mind Reader can mingle among your guests, entertaining them with stunning close-up magic and Mindreading performed right under their very noses.

This creates laughter, astonishment and interest. Which in turn creates a talking point, allowing your guests to interact and get to know each other.

A Magician can also be the ideal pre-dinner entertainment. During this time, they will approach each table and perform a short set of close-up magic as your guests arrive and wait for their evening meal.

For further details, please visit www.eastmidlandsmagic.co.uk or to secure a booking for your special day, please call Mark on 07920 745859
